North Dakota State University (also known as North Dakota State University of Agriculture and Applied Sciences) is a public university in Fargo, North Dakota founded in 1890. NDSU offers a wide variety of majors, minors, certificates, graduate, and doctoral programs. In the 2008-2009 season, NDSU athletics became fully eligible for Division I competition.
The NDSU Bison football team has played home games in the Fargodome since 1993. They were a dominant force in Division II. They’ve won 8 national titles (1965, 1968, 1969, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1990). In 2004 they moved up to Division I-AA, now FCS.
Since joining the FCS, the NDSU Bison have been quite successful. In 2006 the Bison posted a 10-1 record that included a win over FBS Ball State. The following season, the Bison won their first Great West Football Conference championship and achieved the #1 ranking in FCS polls. During the 2007, NDSU beat major FBS teams like Central Michigan University and the University of Minnesota. In 2010, they beat their first big 12 program school, the Kansas Jayhawks.
The NDSU Bison won the 2011 FCS national championship against Sam Houston State University. They won again against Sam Houston in 2012. The 2013 Championship was one of high expectations. They began the season by defeating the Kansas State Wildcats with one of the best drives in school history: an 18 play 80 yard drive that used 8 ½ minutes. This left 28 seconds on the clock for the Wildcats, who were trailing by 3, to win the game. NDSU Linebacker Grant Olson intercepted the first pass attempt by the Wildcats, stunning the crowd and sealing their victory. They finished out the season undefeated with a victory over the Towson Tigers.
The NDSU Bison have also been dominant in many other sports. Their women’s basketball team won five titles during the 1990s. The men’s basketball team has a record of upset victories against teams like University of Wisconsin-Madison and Marquette University. In 2009, The NDSU Bison men’s basketball team defeated Oakland to win the Summit League Tournament and a bid to the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
The NDSU Bison wrestling program won four NCAA Division II team titles under coach Bucky Maughan. When Maughan retired Roger Kish took over and led the 2013-14 NDSU team to career highs and tournament placement in Division I.
In 2008 the NDSU Bison volleyball team went undefeated and won the Summit League’s regular season and tournament championships.
The NDSU Bison women’s softball team won the Summit League tournament in Macomb, Illinois. This was the school’s third team to appear in an NCAA tournament in the calendar year.
In the fall of 2010, the NDSU Bison women’s soccer team achieved the program’s first NCAA tournament bid with a victory over Western Illinois in the Summit League tournament final.
